January has a lot of opinions about how we’re supposed to feel by now. Reset. Refreshed. Motivated. Clear. And as a parent, especially a caregiver, I just don’t experience life that way. I’m constantly starting again. Restarting mornings after tough nights. Restarting routines when something stops working. Restarting expectations when my kid or I need something different than we did last week. For a long time, I treated restarting as failure. Like if I had to try again, it meant I didn’t plan well enough or push hard enough the first time. I don’t believe that anymore. Beginning again is information. It’s data. It’s feedback from real life. It’s choosing adjustment over shame. January didn’t require a big reinvention for us. It required honesty. Honesty about energy levels. Honesty about what’s sustainable. Honesty about the fact that caregiving rarely follows a clean timeline. So if this month didn’t go the way you pictured, you didn’t miss your chance. You’re not late. You’re not behind. You’re not doing it wrong. You’re just starting again without pressure. And in parenting, that’s not just normal. It’s a win. What’s something you’ve had to restart recently, without judging yourself for it?
